The Sauter TN Gold 80 Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge for Gold can be used to ascertain whether gold or silver bars and/or coins are composed solely of gold or silver or whether they have a core of a different metal.

This tester utilizes ultrasound to measure the thickness of gold/silver bars and coins; it uses the following measurement procedure:

1.)    Using the external sensor ultrasound waves are directed onto the test object

2.)    The ultrasound waves penetrate the object, reaching the surface underneath the test object

3.)    The waves are reflected off the surface underneath the test object

4.)    The external sensor detects the reflected ultrasonic waves

5.)    A thickness measurement is indicated

6.)    This measurement is compared to a reading determined using a caliper gauge
